Patema is a brave young royal who hails from an underground civilization that boasts an extensive network of tunnels. Despite being reprimanded for her frequent excursions into the tunnels, which were spurred by the mysterious disappearance of her friend, she persists on her journey. After venturing into the "forbidden zone," she accidentally falls into a massive abyss after being startled by a strange creature. As she plummets towards the sky, she finds herself in an upside-down world that is unfamiliar to her. Fortunately, she is saved by Age, a student from the authoritarian regime of Aiga. Aiga teaches that individuals like Patema, known as "Inverts," are sinners who are destined to be "swallowed by the sky," but Age decides to defy this belief and help his new companion. Despite their differences, the unlikely duo embarks on a journey to unravel the mysteries of their ancestry, exploring worlds that are unique and vastly different from one another. "Sakasama no Patema" is a touching film about the power of acceptance and working together to coexist.
