Kong Hongjun, a half-yao who has lived all his life on Mount Taiheng, finally gets an opportunity to venture into the human world. He is given three tasks: to find his father's murderer, eliminate the Black Jiao and its yao tribes that have infiltrated Chang'an, and return the Heart Lamp to a descendant of the Chen family. However, on his first night in the city, military general Li Jinglong mistakenly absorbs the Heart Lamp. Kong Hongjun receives a mysterious invite to join the Court of Exorcism in Chang'an and discovers that Li Jinglong, who hates yao, is his captain. Along with a cowardly scholar, a fellow yao, and a foreign noble, Kong Hongjun and Li Jinglong must work together to remove the yao lurking in the city. Furthermore, Kong Hongjun must keep his true identity hidden from Li Jinglong while trying to retrieve the Heart Lamp from his body.
