Specializing in the occult, detective Kohachi Inugami is summoned to investigate bizarre incidents of mutilated and rotting livestock in a remote Japanese village by a local inn hostess. While conducting surveillance, Inugami comes across an odd young boy, who is shunned by his peers and known as "Dorotabou" for his stench. Surprised by the detective's attention, Dorotabou agrees to assist in the investigation, despite the hostility of the villagers. As the investigation unfolds, Dorotabou unexpectedly discovers a world where beast-like creatures known as Kemono coexist alongside humans, imbuing his life with newfound purpose.
