The formidable Masaya, a first-grader, is surprisingly emotional, hence, he is unable to walk alone down the gloomy trail leading to school. Fortunately, the skilled little second-grader, Akiyo, accompanies him, holding his hand along the way. Masaya looks up to Akiyo's strength and abilities, but an unexpected occurrence transpires, causing Akiyo to break down in tears. In an effort to cheer up his dear friend, Masaya embarks on an expedition to the far-off Ipponsugi forest to locate the beloved spotted bellflowers that Akiyo adores.
