Once a flamboyant and self-proclaimed crazy scientist, Rintarou Okabe has lost his spark. The memories of his failed friend-rescue mission have left him traumatized and depressed, leading him to abandon his eccentric persona and live an ordinary life as a college student. His friends know nothing of his time-traveling escapades as he spends his days trying to erase the horrors of his past alone.
During his stint as a receptionist at a college tech forum, Okabe meets Maho Hiyajo, a vivacious girl who later turns out to be the interpreter at the forum's presentation by Professor Alexis Leskinen. The duo launch Amadeus - a ground-breaking AI with the ability to store an individual's memories and create an exact replica, quirks and all. After the presentation, Okabe learns that both Maho and Alexis were Kurisu's colleagues in university, and they have recreated her in Amadeus. As Alexis hires him to research the simulation's behavior, Okabe is presented with an opportunity to communicate with a replica of his long-lost dear friend. However, Okabe must tread carefully, as tampering with the natural flow of time could have catastrophic consequences.
