However, that doesn't stop him from befriending gentle-hearted youkai and utilizing the Book of Friends, an ancestral artifact bequeathed to him by his grandmother Reiko, to restore their names. Despite the Matoba clan's recognition of Natsume's remarkable talent, he flatly declines their invitation to join their ranks. He knows that not all exorcists, apart from his friend Shuuichi Natori, treat youkai with fairness, and they indiscriminately settle for sealing them away. Even after Seiji Matoba blackmails Natsume into joining the clan, he remains unwavering in his ideals. In the midst of perilous people and youkai, he remains confident that harmony between both worlds is attainable and refuses to comply with the exorcists' oppressive methods.
