Alas, the youkai met an untimely demise by a speeding truck, leaving a distraught Natsume with a plea for help from the Suzunaru tree spirit to water it until its last breath. In "Mugen no Kakera," Tamami, a schoolgirl, followed a set of instructions on a piece of paper, counting her footsteps as she wandered the woods. After taking a brief nap, she woke up to find Natsume and his talking kitty friend. Tamami uncovered a parallel world in the forest where she could witness the invisible. She shared her ambition to rescue a white owl that guided her to this unusual realm with the duo.
