Captain Tsubasa recounts the story of a young student, whose passion for soccer consumes him entirely. At the tender age of eleven, Tsubasa Oozora played football for leisure like his peers, but for him, it was something that intrigued him more than anything else. To achieve his dream of becoming a great soccer player, Tsubasa has to move with his mother to Nankatsu city, where the elementary school soccer teams are known for their excellence. Being the star of his former team holds no water in Nankatsu, and Tsubasa has to work exceptionally hard to stand out. During his journey, he is faced with formidable competition and is introduced to new companions such as the attractive Sanae Nakazawa and the gifted goalkeeper, Genzo Wakabayashi. Genzo shares Tsubasa's devotion to soccer, and together, they will work towards making Tsubasa's dreams a reality. Tsubasa's ultimate aspiration is to represent Japan in the FIFA World Cup, but achieving that will go beyond just his exceptional playing abilities.
