At the beginning of the 21st century, the once-mythical concept of magic has become an organized technology that is taught as a technical skill. The First High School, a magical institution, divides its students into two groups: "Blooms," or high-scoring students, are placed in the First Course, while "Weeds" are reserve students allocated to the Second Course. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei centers on the lives of the siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, who attend First High School. Miyuki, a prodigy, is assigned to the prestigious First Course after excelling on the exam, whereas Tatsuya is demoted to the Second Course. Despite his "Weed" status and unsatisfactory practical exam scores indicating his lack of magical aptitude, Tatsuya possesses extraordinary knowledge of technical skills, combat proficiency, and uncommon magic techniques, making him the school's anomaly.
