Dai Mugen was once deeply passionate about playing the drums. However, losing to his rival Rin Tanba in a competition left him questioning his own purpose and caused him to quit. One day, Dai meets a peculiar creature named Goutetsu who calls himself a "god." Recognizing Dai's hidden talent, Goutetsu appoints him as his coach, or "oyakata," in the world of "kamizumo," where gods battle each other through sumo wrestling. In these matches, the gods' movements are powered by the drumbeats struck by their oyakata, forcing Dai to pick up his drumsticks once again. As Dai and Goutetsu begin to win more matches, Dai confronts his doubts and rediscovers his passion for this new endeavor, setting his sights on standing on the topmost stage of kamizumo.
