This animated film recounts the uplifting tale of Ryoukan, an esteemed Buddhist monk and poet born into affluence during Japan's Edo period in the 18th century. Despite his privileged background in Izumozaki, Ryoukan willingly forgoes the opulence of his inheritance to gain a greater comprehension of existence through the tenets of Buddhism. Beginning in his youth, he endures a grueling and solitary regimen of training. Yet, despite such hardships, Ryoukan remains unassuming and gracious, and treats all he meets with deference, while shunning money and fame.
