Throughout history, the realm of Remnant has faced a constant menace from the Grimm, beings of terror fixated on destroying humanity and the half-human Faunus. To defend themselves, the world's four kingdoms founded academies that train young people to become huntsmen: soldiers tasked with eliminating the Grimm. In Vale, the lively Ruby Rose, at 15 years old, has always aspired to attend the esteemed Beacon Academy. Unfortunately, her youth precludes her from enrolling, and Ruby must watch as her older sister, Yang Xiao Long, leaves for the academy alone. However, Ruby's life changes when she fights off a group of robbers, and news of her exceptional abilities reaches Professor Ozpin, the headmaster of Beacon. Ruby rejoices when she receives an invitation to join the academy with her sister. Across the world, in the kingdom of Atlas, wealthy heiress Weiss Schnee defies her father's wishes and departs for Beacon, her heart brimming with anticipation. Likewise, solitary rogue Blake Belladonna leaves her vigilante band in search of a better life at the academy. When their paths cross, the four girls' initial meeting is far from affable, as their distinct personalities and beliefs often clash.
