Melos originates from Messina and travels to Syracuse, an impressive city teeming with temples, to purchase a ceremonial sword for his sister's wedding. During his search, he makes friends with an exceptionally talented sculptor. Unfortunately, while taking a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens of the castle, Melos is apprehended by the King's guards. Due to the ruler of Syracuse's fear of assassins, the blameless Melos is sentenced to death. Melos is overcome with desperation as he faces his imminent demise prior to his sister's wedding. Nevertheless, Melos is driven by a strong desire to see his sister's joyous occasion, and so he begs the King for a postponement of his execution by three days to attend the party in Messina and return to Syracuse in time for his sentence. The King distrusts Melos, insisting that he select someone who will take his place if he fails to keep his word. In the event of this uncertainty, the sculptor agrees to be Melos' proxy.
