A Buddhist monk named Genjou Sanzou embarks on a quest, assigned to him by the Emperor, to retrieve the sacred Buddhist scriptures. During his journey, Sanzou comes across an Earth Deity who shares that Buddha has chosen a disciple for him - an infamous Monkey Deity named Son Goku. This mischievous character had been trapped inside a mountain for five hundred years due to causing chaos in Heaven. Along with Sanzou, Goku joins a crew consisting of the alcohol-loving Cho Hakkai, the celestial army General Sagojyou, and their trusty steed, the Dragon Crown Prince Ryuuba. Together they battle fierce monsters and engage in epic bishounen contests while experiencing countless adventures.
