A compilation recap film was made for the Shin Seiki Evangelion series to tide fans over while production delays pushed the release of the movie 'End of Evangelion' back by a month. The story begins with the 'Second Impact,' a massive explosion caused by a meteorite crashing into Antarctica. In Tokyo3, which is both a city and fortress, fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari arrives to reunite with his long-gone father, and finds himself in a giant robot known as Evangelion Unit 01, tasked with fighting off monstrous creatures called 'Angels.' As he battles these creatures, Shinji begins to uncover the truth behind the Second Impact, humankind's struggle against God, and his own fears. The film was released as a two-part feature, with the first two-thirds entitled 'Death' consisting of a recap of the TV series and new animation, and the latter third titled 'Rebirth,' which features the first 28 minutes of the rough cut of End of Evangelion. There are several versions of the film, but we will only consider the first theatrical release for this entry.
