The Meiji era marked the demise of the tanuki's trickery, as their ability to metamorphose into humans could no longer beguile modern technology. Nevertheless, Mameda, a determined young tanuki lassie, remains committed to carrying on her father's legacy of fooling humans. Embarking on a venture to Osaka, she hopes to succeed, but as expected, her ruse falls flat, and she is chased by an irate mob. Seeking refuge in a theater, Mameda encounters the art of rakugo, which she finds captivating when performed by Bunko Daikokutei. Mesmerized by his storytelling style, Mameda determines to become his apprentice.
Although initially hesitant to take on a protégé, Bunko is impressed by Mameda's persistence and commences educating her in the art of rakugo. With the arduous apprenticeship of taiko, theater duties, and learning plays by heart, Mameda must be wholeheartedly devoted if she wishes to master the sole art form that may still have the power to hoodwink people.
