One year prior to Ren's arrival in Kaminohara, Akira moved from Sendai to seek revenge for the injuries inflicted upon his sister during an MS battle. During this time, a lost Haruma is guided by Akira, unveiling a compassionate side of the typically unfeeling adolescent. Haruma witnesses Akira's aggressive MS battles and recognizes his ability to anticipate his opponents' attacks. As a result, Haruma suggests recruiting Akira to join the team with Aoi and Minami. While initially taken aback, Aoi and Minami ultimately trust Haruma's judgment, as he withheld the fourth team member position for the ideal candidate.
