During the 19th century in France, Fantine, a struggling single mother, entrusts her three-year-old daughter Cosette to the care of the Thernadiers, new acquaintances. While out running errands for the family, Cosette meets a gentleman named Jean Valjean. He recognizes her as someone he has been seeking and rescues her from the cruel Thernadiers. Together they make way to a neighboring town where Cosette enjoys a new life thanks to her savior. With Jean's guidance, Cosette vows to use her newfound freedom to help others.
