It has been fourteen years since the Third Impact devastated Earth and humanity is struggling to survive amid the ruins. Shinji Ikari is trapped in Evangelion Unit-01 and finds that the people he once knew have undergone drastic changes. Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami come to his rescue but he is captured by WILLE - a military faction led by his former guardian, Misato Katsuragi. Once allies are now hostile and refuse to help Shinji confront the consequences of his actions. Rei Ayanami intervenes and rescues Shinji from WILLE, taking him to NERV headquarters where he befriends Kaworu Nagisa. Kaworu offers solace and enlightens Shinji about NERV's battle against the Angels. However, things take a dark turn as Shinji must face his previous allies instead of battling the Angels. In the climactic battle, Shinji realizes that he cannot undo the past, regardless of his wishes.
