After the second impact, Japan is left with only Tokyo-3, which is constantly besieged by monstrous creatures known as Angels bent on wiping out humanity. After being separated from his father for over eight years, Shinji Ikari is urgently summoned to NERV Headquarters, a group that uses powerful mechs called Evas to destroy the Angels. He's tasked with piloting Unit 01 alongside fellow Eva pilot Ayanami Rei. It's important to note that there are multiple versions of this film, each with its own version number and release date. The first release was in theaters on September 1st, 2007, while the DVD version released on April 25th, 2008 featured minor adjustments to picture quality, editing, and sound. The special edition DVD of 1.01 also included an explanation of the various officially designated aspects of the film. The Blu-ray/DVD re-release of 1.11, which occurred on May 27th, 2009, offered three additional minutes of animation in the first 15 minutes and rectified any prior video issues.
