As the school festival approached, Makoto Mizuhara, a brilliant high school student in science, was deep in preparation with his best friend Nanami Jinnai. Meanwhile, her brother - the student council president, Katsuhiko Jinnai, always a thorn in Makoto's side, was facing accusations of mismanaging the festival plan. Convinced Makoto was aiming for his position, the cunning rival plotted against him by sabotaging Makoto's latest invention. This device unexpectedly opened a portal, flinging all four of them into a different world! They faced immediate danger as giant bugs attacked Makoto upon their arrival. Fleeing the scene, he discovered a fellow survivor, Rune Venus, and his teacher, Masamichi Fujisawa, who bravely fended off the insects. A group of dignitaries found them soon after, searching for their kidnapped princess, Rune. The visitors were informed they were in a world called El-Hazard and taken to the kingdom of Roshtaria. Unbeknownst to Makoto, Nanami and Jinnai were also trapped in this world. Hence, he worked tirelessly to find a way back to Earth, ignorant of the fact that his rivals were stranded too.
