In 1984, Shoko Asahara established Aum Shinrikyou, a doomsday cult based in Japan. The group conducted a fatal sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway system in 1995, and it was discovered that they were responsible for a smaller sarin attack the prior year.
In 1991, the cult founded its own studio, MAT (Manga, Animation, and Team), to appeal to otaku and advance its recruitment efforts. The studio produced a 10-episode OVA that portrayed Asahara as the Messiah figure. Although the episodes were initially sold separately, a compilation is now available on Aum Shinrikyou's official YouTube channel.
