Since the loss of her father at a young age, Chieri has been living solely with her mother, leaving them as each other's only family. To ease the pain of her father's absence, Chieri has turned to her stuffed doll, Cherry, whom she discovered in a storage room during his funeral. In Chieri's vivid imagination, Cherry has become her faithful companion, offering comfort and support in place of her father. During a visit to her grandmother's home for her father's memorial service, Chieri comes across a stray dog who is about to give birth to puppies.
