The tale follows the expedition of the Chinese Tang monk, Tripitaka, as he guides four apprentice fairy creatures - Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy, and Horse - on a vast expedition to India, endeavoring to obtain the elusive "Script of Wisdom and Truth." En route, they chance upon Flame Mountain, an inferno that never extinguishes.
