The high school student, Yawara Inokuma, leads an undemanding and joyous life with the hope of blending into society as an ordinary young lady with a charming beau. However, her innate talent in Judo, a non-feminine and unappealing modern martial art, poses a hurdle in her plans. To complicate matters further, Yawara is Jigorou Inokuma's only granddaughter, a seventh dan Judo master with big aspirations for his kin to become a Japanese Judoka superstar of the 1990s. Yawara suppresses her abilities to maintain a facade of normalcy, but certain circumstances force her to reveal her Judo skills. Kousaku Matsuda, a sports scribe from a mediocre newspaper, keenly observes Yawara's potential from afar and is eager to publicize her talents to the world.
