The manga series serialized in Young Magazine by Kusunoki Michiharu, is based on the actual street racing that takes place on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway. This dangerous road consists of a stretch known as the "Wangan", which is famous for being the longest, straightest road in Japan. However, the highway is also notorious for having heavy traffic that includes numerous trucks, making accidents and engine blowouts common occurrences. One day, Akio Asakura, a high school student in his third year, drives his Fairlady Z (Z31) and is challenged by Tatsuya Shima, a doctor with a black Porsche 964 Turbo (known as the "BlackBird"). Accompanied by his friend and two girls, Akio loses miserably, leaving him determined to become faster. He visits a junkyard to buy car parts, where he comes across a spotless midnight blue Fairlady Z (S30) that is about to be scrapped. Curiously, he purchases it and discovers the car's fitted with a tuned L28 engine, twin turbos, producing 620bhp, and is alarmingly fast. Akio also learns all previous owners have suffered unfortunate accidents, with the initial owner's death. The manga depicts Akio's various street racing encounters, while centring on his ongoing feud with Tatsuya and the BlackBird, as they battle for superiority.
