The tale commences as a man awakens in a chilly, lonely forest with no recollection of his past. A young girl named Kuon, sporting animal-like traits, swoops in to save him and escorts him to her town while safeguarding him from ferocious beasts known as "boro-gigiri" and a perplexing, crimson mucus. Along their journey, Kuon chooses to name him Haku, setting him apart from the locals who possess animal ears and a tail. Venturing with Kuon to Yamato, they befriend fresh faces while unearthing hidden political tensions. During Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen, Haku unearths the secrets of this unexplored land, including the red mucus enigma and the potential for warring factions among neighboring states.
