Upon discovering the truth about their father's untimely demise, the Shimogamo brothers experienced a brief lull in their usually chaotic lives. Each of them strove to continue their father's legacy in their own unique way. Yaichirou, the eldest, set his sights on becoming the next Trick Magister in order to restore the once-popular shogi tournament and lead the tanuki society. Yajirou yearned to regain his shapeshifting abilities, while Yashirou was content working at the family's factory. However, Yasaburou, the third son, embraced his father's carefree and adventurous spirit by hunting down the elusive tsuchinoko, a mysterious snake-like creature that caused destruction wherever it went. Problems began to arise when Nidaime, the estranged son of their tengu teacher Professor Akadama, returned with a grudge against his father and his apprentice, Benten. Yasaburou's loyalty to his family and friends was suddenly called into question, forcing him to use his cunning and quick wit to maintain peace between humans, tengu, and tanuki.
