In the chaotic final years of the Tokugawa period, numerous children were left fatherless by the wars. Among them was an unidentified son of a samurai, who encounters Ryouma Sakamoto – a man dedicated to opposing the Bakufu government. After seeing the orphan's adept swordsmanship, Ryouma dubs him "Ryo" and invites him to journey alongside him.
