Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki lead ordinary lives as middle school students until their encounter with Kyuubey, a cat-like familiar, and Homura Akemi, a transfer student. Kyuubey offers to grant one wish for each girl in exchange for them becoming magical girls with the power to realize their dreams. However, Homura, also a magical girl, warns them about the true nature of their transformation.
