The pilot episode of the Popolocrois Monogatari animation project was created in 1993 in an effort to secure funding for a theatrical release. However, the project evolved into a TV anime, and the pilot was ultimately made available to the public 7 years later on the first DVD volume of Popolocrois Monogatari. The TV anime was eventually produced five years after the pilot's creation.
