Souta Tawara escapes the hustle and bustle of Tokyo by making his way back to his hometown in Kagawa. While his parents are no longer alive, his family's udon restaurant brings back memories of his childhood when his family was intact. Nostalgic, he enters the restaurant and finds a filthy young boy sleeping. Initially, Souta doesn't think much about the meeting and offers food and clothing to the child. However, much to his surprise, the boy promptly sprouts a pair of furry ears and a tail! Eventually, Souta learns the boy is the shapeshifting tanuki that Kagawa's inhabitants have been gossiping about for years. Believing the child has led a solitary life, he adopts him and calls him Poko. Through their relationship, Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari showcases Souta and Poko's heartwarming bond. As the two spend time together, Souta recalls his own past, his childhood home, and the connection he shared with his father.
