The catastrophic event known as Second Impact had devastated mankind over a decade ago. By the year 2015, only a select few knew about the existence of the malevolent Angels whose sole aim was to trigger the Third Impact and wipe out humanity. When Shinji, a teenager, was summoned to Tokyo-3 by his estranged father Gendou Ikari, he hoped that it was an olive branch extended for their broken relationship. However, he quickly realized his real purpose was to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, a colossal fighting machine that could hold its own against the Angels.
