In Japan's summer of 1945, an elementary school girl, Nobuko, saves a small cat from crows. Although there is a shortage of food, Nobuko wants to take in the feline. Her parents object, but Nobuko convinces them, and she names the cat Kuro thanks to its black fur. Kuro brings joy to the household, but the war's progression continues to worsen.
