No matter how hard Shinichirou Asano tries, luck doesn't seem to be on his side. Abandoned by his globe-trotting parents, he's scraping by with minimal job prospects. Things take a turn for the worse when he's let go from his latest job, leaving him feeling desperate as a student with no future in sight. On his way home one night, Shinichirou is attacked by a monstrous centipede, but luckily, he's saved by an enigmatic girl named Sakuya Shimazu. She's a skilled archer who also attends his school, and as he helps her recuperate from her wounds, he discovers that Sakuya and her kin are exorcists. Their mission is to defend humanity from hostile spirits and creatures. Sakuya enlists Shinichirou's assistance in trapping a nekomata he inadvertently freed, and the two set out on an adventure together. In order to secure a new caretaker, Sakuya's family offers Shinichirou a job due to his culinary expertise and cleaning proficiency. Although it's not his ideal position, it allows him to make ends meet and keep his stomach full.
