In 1957, the Federal Republic of Zirnitra accomplished an unprecedented feat by launching the first living creature, a dog, into space, sparking a fierce rivalry with their opponent, the United Kingdom of Arnack. Due to the absence of reliable ways to measure the impact of space exploration on humans, Zirnitra opted to conduct experiments on vampires, who have similar biology to humans, to determine its effects. Irina Luminesk, displaced from her home, volunteers to be a test subject and undergoes an intensive training regimen. Her mentor and companion on this cosmic mission is Lev Leps, a former candidate for space travel. As they embark on this journey together, their shared wonder of the vast universe brings them closer together.
