Tomona dives into the waters of the battle of Dan-no-ura to find an ancient sword, but tragedy strikes when he loses both his sight and his father. With few options left, he learns to play the biwa and joins a troupe of storytelling performers under the name Tomoichi.
Tomoichi befriends a strange person named Inu-Ou, who enjoys terrorizing others with his deformed appearance. Surprised by Tomoichi's acceptance, the two become fast friends and start performing together. Inu-Ou discovers he can hear spirits telling forgotten tales of the Heike clan, and they incorporate these stories into their performances.
As their popularity grows, Tomoichi changes his name to Tomoari and uses his music to promote Inu-Ou's underground dance performances. However, their unconventional style challenges traditional values upheld by the shogunate. They soon face opposition as their fame rises, and must confront the forces of tradition in order to continue their performances.
