In the future, a revolutionary MRI technology can retrieve memory images from the brains of deceased crime victims and witnesses within 48 hours of death, thus aiding in solving murder cases. However, the ethics of this technology have been questioned, causing the police division responsible for MRI investigations, Section Nine, under the leadership of Tsuyoshi Maki, to face intense scrutiny from the media and the government. Members of the team must confront the traumatic events from both the victim and perpetrator's perspectives, in addition to obtaining consent from the victim's families to carry out post-mortem MRI scans.
After the death of Maki's best friend, Katsuhiro Suzuki, under mysterious circumstances following the viewing of MRI footage from a gruesome criminal case, Ikkou Aoki, a recent graduate of the police academy, joins Section Nine to fill Suzuki's position. As a series of seemingly unrelated events converge around Suzuki's case, Section Nine's survival is threatened, resulting in their greatest challenge yet.
