As the Edo era draws to a close, Gabimaru, formerly the most formidable shinobi of Iwagakure, finds himself on death row. However, Gabimaru receives an unprecedented offer: his freedom will be granted if he can retrieve the Elixir of Life from Sukhavati, an island shrouded in Buddhist legend. With the hope of reuniting with his beloved wife, Gabimaru embarks on a perilous journey to the island accompanied by Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, his executioner. Throughout their journey, they encounter other death row prisoners vying for the Elixir, strange creatures, enigmatic statues, and the island's reclusive residents.
