The screen adaptation of Haikara-san ga Tooru is split into two parts. In the first part, the tale of Benio Hanamura unfolds. Benio is a 17-year-old living in the Taisho epoch of 1918. She is atypical as she isn't drawn to the customary ways and opts to express herself as a fearless, high-spirited tomboy. Benio revels in activities like kendo, and loves exciting pursuits such as climbing trees with her closest companions, Tamaki and Ranmaru. Despite her family's objections, Benio tenaciously clings to her desire to fulfill her romantic hopes. She endures multiple challenges of independence, camaraderie, and love during wartime.
