Makoto "Edamame" Edamura is a pickpocket and scam artist who turns to a life of crime after a string of unfortunate events. However, when he swindles what he believed to be an ignorant tourist, he discovers that he's been conned and now has the police on his tail. As he tries to make his escape, Makoto runs into the tourist once again, who reveals himself to be a fellow con artist named Laurent Thierry. The two end up in Los Angeles, where Makoto challenges Laurent to a competition to determine the better swindler. Their target: the biggest mafia boss on the West Coast. Their journey takes them from city to city, as Makoto learns the tricks of the trade from Laurent and his eclectic crew. Makoto soon realizes that he's gotten more than he bargained for, as his skills are continuously tested in the world of high-stakes fraud.
