Saichi Sugimoto, a former soldier recognized as "Sugimoto the Immortal" for his bravery in war, spends his time scouring for gold in the 1900s Hokkaido. His aim is to keep a promise he made to his departed friend to aid his family, particularly his ailing wife. One evening, a drunken ally recounts a story concerning a man who slaughtered a group of Ainu and looted an abundance in gold, leaving a coded map inked on his cellmate's skin. Although hesitant at first, Sugimoto becomes convinced after discovering matching tattoos on the body of his drunk acquaintance. As he struggles to flee from a ferocious bear, he unexpectedly crosses path with Asirpa, a young Ainu girl whose father was among those slain. Asirpa's hunting tactics and Sugimoto's survival intuition prompt them to become allies in an endeavor to unveil the secret riches--one to reclaim what is rightfully hers and the other to fulfill his friend's final wish.
