In a state of deep despair, Hitomi Kanzaki has lost all desire to live and just wants to slip into eternal slumber. However, her misery unwittingly summons Lord Folken who transports her to the world of Gaea. Mistaken for the Wing Goddess, the one who is believed to have powers to summon the formidable Dragon Armor Escaflowne, Hitomi is welcomed by Gaea's inhabitants. Meanwhile, King Van, the only survivor of the White Dragon Clan, is consumed by the desire to avenge his kingdom, which was decimated by the Black Dragon Clan. He now lives a life of vengeance, wielding his sword at every opportunity. With the Wing Goddess finally appearing on Gaea, the fate of the world rests upon her shoulders. Depending on how she chooses to control Escaflowne, Gaea could either be doomed to destruction or propelled towards lasting peace.
