As a young student in elementary school, Shouya Ishida found joy in partaking in the cruelest forms of entertainment, earning himself a reputation as a mischievous troublemaker. However, when Shouko Nishimiya, a deaf student, entered their class, she was singled out as the object of their bullying, despite her mother's intervention. As a result, Shouko was eventually forced to leave the school, leaving Shouya to bear the consequences of his actions. Unaided by the teachers, he was abandoned by his peers throughout his elementary and middle school years. Now in his third year of high school, Shouya still bears the scars of his past transgressions. But driven by a desire for redemption, he sets out to make amends with Shouko while battling his inner demons.
